Bryan Black
has worked professionally as a conductor, educator, church musician and arts
advocate since moving to
Atlanta
in 1994. He first received training as an organist and pianist (BM, Samford
Univeristy) then followed a passion for choral music and conducting at the
graduate level (MM, The Florida State University) where he was profoundly
influenced by Rodney Eichenberger.
Bryan also
holds the “ZDaF” or “Certificate of German” granted by the Goethe-Institut in
Berlin.
He
has led seminars, designed music in worship services and conducted massed choirs
over three terms as an R&S chair for the Georgia
chapter of the American Choral Director’s Association.
For the next two years he will serve as Southern
Division R&S for Music in Worship
Although
leading the 4,000 member Marietta First United Methodist music ministry is his
primary vocation, Black taught on the adjunct faculty of Georgia State for a
number of years and presently conducts both the DeKalb Choral Guild and the
hundred-voice Cobb Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
These associations have fostered European concert
tours, performances at Piccolo Spoleto, educational outreach programs and guest
conducting for regional events such as the Lake Junaluska Music Week sponsored
by the United Methodist Church.
As a singer,
Bryan
was honored to perform in Mr. Shaw’s last
Mass in B-minor
with the ASO Chamber Chorus and sing in his memory for the Orlando and San
Antonio ACDA conventions.
In
2003, he was named a “Lexus Leader of the Arts” by Public Broadcasting Atlanta
for his contributions to the city’s cultural life.
He makes his home in Marietta
with his wife, Amy, and their daughter, Margaret.
